Carli Lloyd signs with Manchester City

To the surprise of many hardcore fans, Manchester City has signed USWNT captain Carli Lloyd in its latest masterstroke for a short-term deal. And contrary to many transfers in the world of futbol-soccer, Lloyd can state that the decision was purely her own.

Although she is known for her determination and willpower in and out of the pitch, both parties met in an unlikely fashion. Carli Lloyd had decided to stay under the radar as she spent time in England on late December.

After a series of soft approaches by Manchester City Women coach Nick Cushing, a visit and a few conversations ended up turning into a deal. In an interview with CityTV, Carli Lloyd expressed her feelings on the experience.

“Seeing the facilities and the organization and dealing with Nick Cushing, [I’ve found] there’s just a great philosophy in place. When you add in Champions League and all of these other unbelievable events, it’s hard not to want to come”.

Carli Lloyd is aiming for gold

She will join the ranks of Manchester City to participate in the F.A. Women’s Super League and her stay will be long enough for her to play for them during the women’s F.A. Cup and the UEFA Champions League.

Cushing has proven himself as the right man to lead the club to greatness. Regarding the American veteran, he added that “Carli has had an incredible career and is recognized as one of the best in the world. There is much we can learn from her that will help us to improve as a team. We are all looking forward to working with her over the coming months”.

Fans will not have to wait for long, as June marks her return to Houston Dash just in time to participate for the second half of the season in American soil.

Even though she has nothing left to prove, Carli Lloyd has gold on her mind. She will be in a new environment and a different philosophy, so it is a new challenge for the seasoned veteran.

“It’s definitely an unbelievable opportunity to be able to compete in the Spring Series, the FA Cup and most importantly, the Champions League”, she added.

It is expected that the club will benefit from her versatility as a midfielder, as well as her strong sense of commitment and work ethics.

“[I want to be] someone who can really help some of the younger players – that’s kind of my role and hopefully, I can instill some of the things I’ve learned into them”.
