2017 UEFA Champions League Final to Be Played in Cardiff

The UEFA’s executive committee has spoken. The 2017 Champions League finals will be played on June 3rd at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales. The 74,500 capacity venue is located on the site of the Cardiff Arms Park -which was the old stadium- and it hosted its first match in June 1999.

The Millennium Stadium is the third largest in Britain and its 400-tonne retractable roof takes about 20 minutes to open or close. Its playing surface is made up of 7,412 squares, and they can be removed and stored whenever is necessary.

The Welsh stadium was originally built to host the 1999 Rugby World Cup and had a total cost of £114 million. The first futbol-soccer match played there was in March 2000 and it was actually a friendly game between the Finish and Welsh National Teams. At one point the stadium was the regular venue of the Welsh National Team. Nevertheless, due to declining attendances many games were held at much smaller and modern stadiums like the Cardiff City and the Liberty Stadium, at least for a long while. Although, rugby matches are the real bread and butter of the site.

During Wembley Stadium’s renovation the Welsh city held the finals of other English cups, and throughout that time the Millennium Stadium acquired an interesting ‘curse,’ for the first 11 major cup finals only the teams occupying the home dressing room won.

Since it has an excellent location, the Millennium Stadium has more than its fare share of pubs, bars and restaurants in the stadium’s district. There are plenty of hotels with all kinds of price categories, which is just another reason why this stadium is an ideal choice for the 2017 Champions League finals. However, we will have to wait a couple months more to see how it goes.
